Childhood physician. Growing up, children may see a pediatric physician or a family doctor. These doctors can provide care when illness or injury occurs. They also perform yearly physical exams if required by schools. They are usually chosen by your parents. When women enter their teens, they take their first step into the world of gynecology and obstetrics. Many girls start going to a gynecologist for annual exams and birth control questions. Girls should start seeing a gynecologist or OBGYN when they become sexually active. Young adult years. As young adults, women will continue to use the services of doctors who specialize in gynecology and obstetrics. Annual visits to a gynecologist will continue and additional visits may happen if you have concerns. If women decide to have a child, or find themselves expecting, they will need the services of an obstetrician. This physician provides care to women who are expecting and who have recently given birth. Older years. As women age and begin to go through menopause, they may think their visits their gynecology and obstetrics physicians can end. However, women should continue to see their gynecologist or OBGYN throughout their lives. These doctors will continue to check for cancer such as breast cancer. They can also guide women through menopause and may even suggest treatments such as hormone therapy to help control symptoms.
